Hurricane Safety

While forecasting methods and tools are improving each year, people and property are still at great risk due to tropical storms and hirricanes.  Our proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, contributes to those risks. It is for this reason, that it is important for you to get a basic understanding of hurricanes and tropical storms. 

 

PRE-SEASON PREPARATION

  • Enter the season prepared.
  • Know all evacuation routes, including alternative routes.
  • Make sure your home meets building codes for withstanding hurricanes.
  • Have proper tools, supplies, and a first aid kit on hand.
  • Have plenty of flashlights and batteries. 

WHEN A WATCH OR WARNING IS ISSUED

  • Leave low lying areas.
  • Protect windows with plywood boards or shutters.
  • Secure outside objects.
  • Make sure you have plenty of food, water and fuel for several days.
  • If called to evacuate, please do so immediately.

DURING THE STORM

  • Stay in a safe, secure room.
  • Stay away from windows.
  • Do not use the phone, or candles.
  • Monitor weather and civil service bulletins on either a regular or NOAA Radio.
  • Have supplies on hand
  • When the eye passes over, remain indoors as the storm will resume again.

AFTER THE STORM

  • Make sure that all is definately clear outside, and that the storm has completely passed before going outside.
  • Look for downed power lines, stay away from them, and report them to authorities.
  • Use your stored water and food until the local water supply has been deemed safe.
  • Be aware of snakes and animals who may have been displaced with high water.
